All,

I’m recommending 'All the Birds in the Sky', by Charlie Jane Anders and 'Ninefox Gambit', by Yoon Ha Lee as books for the group to read.

Both of them are ’17 Hugo novel finalists. Of the finalists, these two aren’t part of a series (yet?) so we wouldn’t be stepping into the middle of a larger arch reading them.

Another book, 'Too Like the Lightning’, by Ada Palmer, is the first book in a series and might be easy to step into, but book's page count is a bit higher than the other two and book length has been brought up as a concern.

The ’17 novel nominees are below.

I got the list of nominees off of https://io9.gizmodo.com/here-are-the-2017-hugo-awards-finalists-1793991378 and the page counts and series status from the minuteman library database.

All the Birds in the Sky, by Charlie Jane Anders (Tor Books / Titan Books) - 316 pages - Not part of a series (yet?)
A Closed and Common Orbit, by Becky Chambers (Hodder & Stoughton / Harper Voyager US) - 367 pages - book 2 or series.
Death’s End by Cixin Liu, translated by Ken Liu (Tor Books / Head of Zeus) - 604 pages - part 3 of series (3 body problem series)
Ninefox Gambit, by Yoon Ha Lee (Solaris Books) - 317 pages - Not part of series (yet?)
The Obelisk Gate, by N. K. Jemisin (Orbit Books) - 433 pages Book 2 of series.
Too Like the Lightning, by Ada Palmer (Tor Books) - 432 pages Book 1 of series.

I'm also nominating Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell for the September book, with a possible special media viewing of the BBC miniseries, too. Please weigh in on these choices soon as possible. If I do not hear any alternative choices with a significant number of votes by Monday, I will assume that the above two books will be our group selections.
