Hi NESFA folks-

I have some family obligations that will prevent me from coming to the
reading group tonight. Having three kids under 6 sometimes throws a wrench
in my schedule, so I hope you all have a nice evening.

*Spoilers* below, but I wanted to give my impression of *Norton's Time
Traders.* Her prose style didn't impress me. After reading Atwood and
Bujold, I expect more of narrative prose and I find Norton's to be
simplistic and sort of dry. I was, however, very enchanted by her take on
time travel. I was expecting more of the same; a sort of riff of off of
popular notions surrounding time travel that can produce all sorts of
sub-rate fiction (*The time Traveler's Wife*, cough), but Norton did
something pretty unique. I didn't care much about her story until Ross
learns about the possibility of an ancient, human ancestor that was more
advanced than the modern incarnation. No traces of the civilization exist
because everything they made was temporary; no pyramids, as it were. I
found that utterly delightful. It may be one of my favorite takes on time
travel yet.

Hope you guys have a good discussion.
